We buy a great grill, put in a pool, get the kids the best play equipment but we can use our backyard because of the mosquitoes. This doesn’t have to be how it plays out, protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes while enjoying the outdoors.
Depending on where you live, mosquitoes may be active all year around. In Texas and other Southern states that have year around mosquitoes, you must take the appropriate steps to prevent mosquitoes from biting you and your family. While most mosquitoes don’t carry diseases, there are a few species capable of transmitting disease. High temperatures, high humidity, and stagnant water help to increase mosquito populations. Exposure to West Nile Virus and other diseases also increases.
Some ways to prevent West Nile Virus or any other mosquito borne illness is to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Here are some suggestions:
1) Use an EPA approved insect repellent or a homemade mosquito control spray from our list of suggestions
2) Wear appropriate clothing, such as long-sleeves, long pants and socks
3) When possible avoid the backyard at dawn and dusk
4) Drain any standing water around your property. Mosquitoes bread in stagnate water and can breed in as little as a teaspoon of water.
5) Dispose of or dump any water holding container which can breed thousands of mosquitoes. This includes tarps on firewood, wheelbarrows, carts, buckets, and anything holding water.
6) Repair leaky outdoor faucets. If you have to have water somewhere, use the Bt dunks to make sure larvae cannot develop.
7) Change the water in bird baths, plant pots, and water bowls for pets at least once a week.
8) Clean gutters and make sure water doesn’t stand by gutter drains.
